Pointe-à-Pitre Airport modernization
Pointe-à-Pitre Airport is upgrading its baggage handling systems to the latest standard 3 security level. The project, entrusted once again to Alstef Group by SAGPC and supervised by TG Concept and ADP Group, combines enhanced security with improved passenger flow. All works were carried out without disrupting airport operations.
About this Project
- Client: SAGPC (Société Aéroportuaire Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbe)
- Location: Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe
Background
Pointe-à-Pitre Airport is a key hub for regional and international connections. As part of its modernization program, the Société Aéroportuaire Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes (SAGPC) selected Alstef Group to upgrade its baggage handling systems to Standard 3. This new standard complies with the latest international security requirements and improves operational flow.
The large-scale project was carried out with TG Concept and ADP Group. It strengthens both safety and efficiency while introducing cutting-edge technologies. One major challenge was to renovate the facilities without disrupting operations. Despite the works, airlines and passengers benefited from uninterrupted service.
Terminal Modernization: a Phased Project
Terminal 2 Upgrades
In September 2022, two Standard 3 Explosive Detection System (EDS) machines were installed at Terminal 2. These new systems meet all current baggage screening rules. In addition, they increase the terminal’s screening capacity.
Terminal 1 Overhaul
Terminal 1 underwent a complete redesign. In both the East and West zones, outdated Standard 2 systems were removed. They were replaced by two Standard 3 machines located in a dedicated off-site building called the “Remote Sorting Facility.” This major phase was finalized in November 2023.
West Zone Redesign
The West zone was also reconfigured to improve efficiency. Two redundant conveyor lines were added to secure the flow of luggage. At the same time, old check-in counters are being replaced with digital solutions such as Automatic Bag Drop (ABD). These changes streamline the process and improve the passenger experience.
New Equipment and Technologies
The modernization program equipped the airport with several new systems, including:
-
Two Standard 3 EDS machines at Terminal 2.
-
Two departure carousels, three arrival carousels, and additional conveyors.
-
Bagware and Bagsort software for centralized baggage management.
-
38 new check-in counters with integrated weighing systems.
-
Two conveyor systems serving the East and West zones.
These upgrades provide both operational reliability and greater passenger comfort.
A Stronger Role in the Caribbean
This ambitious project aligns Pointe-à-Pitre Airport with the highest international standards. It enhances both safety and efficiency across its terminals. Thanks to these investments, SAGPC is ready to meet the growing expectations of passengers and airlines. Above all, the program strengthens the airport’s strategic role in the Caribbean region.
